Spine Problems

Patients of lumbar herniated disc often complaint of severe radiating pain in legs with back ache. In case of young patients, the condition can be with treated conservatively after performing a MRI Study. If conservative trial fails for six weeks then surgery is recommended for long term benefit. Patient may also opt for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery / Discectomy.

Older patients with spinal stenosis often presents with complaints of radiating pain and tingling sensations on standing or walking. They have to sit or take rest to get rid of these symtoms. This is relatively slowly progressive disease significantly affecting the quality of life. MRI of such patient shows narrow spinal canal compressing nerve roots. If conservative trial fails, patients are benefited from microsurgical/Minimally Invasive decompression with high success rate.

Advantages of Minimally Invasive Surgery

  • Small incisions
  • Small surgical scars
  • Less blood loss
  • Less trauma to the body and muscles
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Lower infection rate
  • Shorter hospitalization
  • Quicker recovery

Spinal fracture is a major emergency in spine surgery. Due to increased vehicular accidents patients with spinal injuries often have cervical, thoracic or lumbar fractures causing loss of limb functions and bladder and bowel control. Patient needs emergency surgery to get the maximum benefit in terms of neurological recovery and for mobilization.

Here pictures shows first patient with C2-3 fracture dislocation treated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with plating.

Second patient had fracture dislocation of C4-5 and treated with combined anterior and posterior fixation.

Older patients with osteoporotic fractures have severe back pain and often require vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty procedure to get rid of pain if conservative trial fails.

If patient has neurological symptoms in form of weakness or paralysis with osteoporotic compression fracture, he/she will often benefit from surgical decompression with instrumented fixation with/without vertebroplasty/kyphopasty.

Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, most often manifests itself in children during growth. At Zydus Hospital, Dr. Modi, who has mastered in scoliosis corrective surgeries and specialized in the diagnosis and care of patients with scoliosis, offers the most advanced treatments available. Scoliosis can happen to any age and can be treated conservatively as well as surgically shown below :

When one vertebra (bone in your back) slides over the other vertebra causing instability in spine and severe back pain with numbness / weakness in the leg(s). This condition can lead to intractable mechanical back pain with severe radicular leg pain restricting patient’s daily activity if not treated. However, with timely surgery patient not only gets complete relief but also recovers well.
