Three main types of GI surgeries include :
-
Open surgery
-
For complex or emergency cases, it remains a trusted approach. It involves substantial incision to provide direct access to the abdominal cavity. It is the most traditional and versatile method of treating GI issues like trauma cases, large tumour and cases with significant adhesions as it allows comprehensive exploration.
-
Laparoscopic Surgery (Minimally Invasive Surgery)
-
A step ahead of open surgery, uses small incisions and special stick like instruments to perform surgery with less trauma.
Procedure: Small incisions are made to insert a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) and surgical instruments. The surgeon operates while watching the procedure on a monitor.
Advantages: Scar sizes will be smaller, faster recovery in comparison to open surgery, reduced pain and post-op infection rate.
-
Robot-Assisted Surgery
-
It is the most advanced minimally invasive technique. It uses highly advanced technological robotic arms controlled by the surgeon via console, offering unparalleled precision, flexibility and visualization.
Procedure: Small incisions are made in abdomen. A 3DHD camera provides a magnified view of the surgical area. The robotic arms replicate the surgeon’s movements with greater precision and stability.
Advantages: Exceptional accuracy for delicate procedure e.g. cancer surgery, colorectal. Faster recovery, reduced blood loss and minimal pain. Reduced surgeon fatigue, especially during long procedures.
