- Hepatitis A , B & C
Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver caused primarily by viral infections. Among these, Hepatitis A, B, and C are the most common types, each differing in mode of transmission, severity, and treatment. At Zydus Hospitals, our hepatology team provides advanced diagnostics, expert care, and evidence-based hepatitis treatment guided by global standards.
-
Diagnosis
-
Diagnosis is usually done using blood tests like HBsAg, HBsAg, HBeAg, anti-HCV, viral load (HBV DNA / HCV RNA), LFT, INR, and albumin levels.
-
Zydus has advanced technology like the FibroScan and MRI-PDFF that helps accurately assess fibrosis, cirrhosis and fatty liver. Ultrasound or CT or MRI is also used that can primarily detect swelling, presence of nodules or even measure portal hypertension. Liver tumor screening is also done using AFP with MRI or ultrasound every 6 months for patients with chronic HBV or HCV or cirrhosis.

Hepatitis A - Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
-
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that causes mild to moderate inflammation of the liver. It spreads through consumption of contaminated food or water, or by direct contact with an infected person. The infection is generally short-term and does not lead to chronic liver disease.
-
Symptoms of Hepatitis A
-
Flu-like fever
-
Fatigue and weakness
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Diarrhoea
-
Loss of appetite
-
Dark-colored urine
-
Joint pain and mild jaundice
-
Most cases of hepatitis A treatment focus on supportive care, hydration, and adequate rest. There is no specific antiviral medicine, but patients are advised to follow hepatitis A treatment guidelines to aid liver recovery.
-
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, along with avoidance of alcohol and fatty foods, forms part of the hepatitis A treatment and diet plan.
-
A preventive Hepatitis A vaccine is available and recommended for children and adults at risk.

Hepatitis B - Prevention and Advanced Treatment Options
-
Hepatitis B is a serious viral infection that affects the liver and can progress to chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver failure, or even liver cancer if left untreated. It spreads through contact with infected blood, unprotected sexual contact, or transmission from mother to child during birth.
-
Symptoms of Hepatitis B
-
Fatigue
-
Right upper abdominal pain/dicomfort
-
Fever and nausea
-
Dark urine
-
Unexplained weight loss
-
Clay-colored stool
-
Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
-
Modern hepatitis B treatment involves antiviral therapy that helps control the virus and prevent further liver damage. Patients are monitored for liver enzyme levels and viral load as per international hepatitis B treatment guidelines.
-
In expectant mothers, special consideration is given to the treatment of hepatitis B in pregnancy to prevent transmission to the baby.
-
While there is currently no permanent hepatitis B treatment cure, antiviral therapy and vaccination can effectively suppress the virus and prevent complications.
-
Hepatitis B treatment medicine includes approved antivirals such as tenofovir or entecavir, prescribed by hepatitis B specialists based on disease stage.
-
Zydus Hospitals houses experienced hepatitis B specialists, who are adept at starting medications at the right time to reduce any chances of further damage. Treatment is usually initiated when a high viral load is detected, liver enzymes are elevated, there are signs of fibrosis or cirrhosis, there is a family history of liver cancer, pregnant mothers have high HBV DNA or the patient is immunocompromised.
-
A safe and effective Hepatitis B vaccine is available to prevent infection.

Hepatitis C - Diagnosis and Modern Treatment Options
-
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that spreads primarily through infected blood, often due to shared needles, unsterile medical equipment, or blood transfusions. It can cause both acute and chronic liver infections, potentially leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer if untreated.
-
Symptoms of Hepatitis C
-
Persistent fatigue
-
Loss of appetite
-
Easy bruising or bleeding
-
Itchy skin
-
Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
-
Dark urine
-
There is currently no vaccine for Hepatitis C, but hepatitis C treatment and hepatitis C virus treatment are highly successful with modern antiviral drugs with short-duration therapy using DAA medications. These medications can eliminate the virus from the body in over 95% of cases when taken as prescribed.
-
Patients also receive dietary advice and regular monitoring as part of hepatitis C care, ensuring liver health restoration and prevention of recurrence.

Early diagnosis can save lives.
-
Long-term Monitoring
-
For HBV patients:
-
Viral load every 6–12 months
-
FibroScan yearly
-
Ultrasound & AFP every 6 months
-
For cured HCV patients:
-
No ongoing antiviral therapy
-
Cirrhosis patients need lifelong cancer surveillance
-
For all types of hepatitis A, B, or C, early detection, vaccination, and adherence to prescribed therapy remain key to preventing complications and restoring liver health.
