Medical Oncology (Blood Cancer Treatment)

Blood cancer is a general term used for cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. These are categorized in three main types:

Leukaemia – A type of cancer found in the blood and bone marrow, this is caused by uncontrolled or rapid production of abnormal white blood cells (WBC). The greater number of abnormal white blood cells are not able to fight against any infection, and the bone marrow loses the ability to produce red blood cells and platelets.

Lymphoma - A type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system. Lymphatic system is responsible for removal of excess fluids from our body, this also stimulate production of immune cells. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that are responsible for fighting infection. Over a period to time the abnormal lymphocytes become lymphoma cells, which multiply and collect in our lymph nodes and other tissues. Over a period of time, these cancerous cells weaken your immune system.

Myeloma – Is the cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells are white blood cells that are responsible for building disease and infection fighting antibodies in our body. Myeloma cells hinder the normal production of antibodies, leaving your body's immune system weakened and susceptible to infection.
